WELCOME TO SPENCER LEIGH’S ‘ON THE BEAT’
“On the Beat” is for anyone who has an interest in popular music, and, in particular listeners to my BBC Radio Merseyside programme. “On the Beat” is broadcast every Sunday from 7.00pm on BBC Radio Merseyside Programme – 95.8 FM. It is also on 1485 medium wave and on digital as well as the iPlayer and Listen Again for 30 days. In addition to my radio programme, I have written about popular music for many years. My particular specialities are the Beatles and Merseybeat. I am a Liverpudlian myself, and broadcast from the city – very close to where the Beatles and others changed the face of popular music.
December 2015 – Three new features have been added. ‘The Beatles vs The Monkees’, ‘The Dirty,Dirty Blues’ and ‘British Doo-wop’.
January 2017 – Three new features have been added: a biography of Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers and interviews with James Burton/Glen D Hardin and Billy Bragg/Joe Henry.
At the moment I’m working on a huge Bob Dylan biography: I didn’t intend it to be so long but he has just done so much.
It is called Bob Dylan: Outlaw Blues. It is not out until July 2020 but you can read about it here.
