Product Description

“Sweeping The Blues Away – A Celebration of The Merseysippi Jazz Band” by Spencer Leigh. Institute of Popular Music, University of Liverpool (2002) Price: £6 (UK).

A Liverpool institution, the Merseysippi Jazz Band has been going since 1949 and still had four original members in its lineup when I wrote the book in 2002. John Lennon called them “the old buggers” in 1962! I enjoyed writing this book as I knew that there would be plenty of good stories from musicians who still wanted to keep their day jobs – and the story comes with added Clinton Ford. There was never a dull moment with Clinton around.

“The book conjures up a world bursting with life, enthusiasm, creativity and musicians where continuing love for their craft would put many ‘serious’ practitioners to shame.” (Brian Blain, Musician magazine 2003)
